(Synopsis)
Alexander Gravenstein was a teenager filled with misguided potential set on a path of self-destruction. Raised as an orphan, by guardians of a faceless agency, there has never been stability to his life as he bounced from guardian to guardian, house to house, and private school to private school. Since his birth the agency has been grooming him for an extraordinary school where only the brightest minds on Earth are invited.
After breaking into secret government transportation center, his life is changed forever when he finds himself boarding a bus headed for a remote spaceport. A bus, as it turns out, he was meant to be on.
United Planetary, the global organization that fostered the exploration of our solar system and beyond, has secretly formed the Intergalactic Alliance to maintain relations between the galaxy's fifteen known, space faring species and prepare future generations of mathematicians, scientists and engineers for an Intergalactic Civilization.
Alex settles in and begins adjusting to his new life aboard the colossal space station that houses the Intergalactic Academy. For the first time in his life begins developing a real friendship with Chantal Cloud, a Shoshone Indian from a Wyoming reservation, and Beyrit Weiver, an orange skinned teenager from Earth's nearest neighbor, Alpha Centauri. While balancing time between studying, practicing Space-Ball and flight lessons, Alex and his friends find themselves attempting to unravel the conspiracy of a spy and terrorist that has infiltrated the Intergalactic Alliance.
Jumping head first into danger, the three students find themselves the only hope of defending the Intergalactic Alliance's control over the Hyper-Bridges, a system of devices allowing instantaneous travel across vast regions of space. Stopping the enemy's espionage agent will take their collective knowledge and skills, while testing the bonds of their newly formed friendships.
After thwarting the theft and kidnapping Alex learns that the Intergalactic Alliance has secrets of their own; secrets surrounding the disappearance of the Starship Hermes and it's crew including Alexander's parents, Jonathan and Joanna Chapman, secrets of a newly discovered species whose aim is to seize control of the Hyper-Bridges and colonize the known galaxy, secrets behind the reappearance of the Marauders, the planet destroying builders of the Hyper-Gates.
